All visitors to the Gangneung Money Museum website! Thank you for your visit.

The world's first banknotes featuring a mother and son were born in South Korea, a unique artifact that will be recorded in the history of money for thousands of years. Shin Saimdang and Yulgok Yi I, the protagonists of the banknotes featuring the mother and son, were both born and grew up in Gangneung and likely spent their happiest moments together at Ojukheon. To live up to the title, ‘Gangneung, the Birthplace of the World's First Mother and Son Depicted on Money,’ Gangneung City has collaborated with the Bank of Korea to redefine the Gangneung Money Museum, where you can explore the stories of the great mother and son, along with the history and values of Korean money.

In this museum, as we share the stories of the great mother and son, who have become the representative figures of South Korea, we have strived to present creative and forward-looking new corners that align with the era of the rapidly changing 4th Industrial Revolution. From the captivating introductory space to various experiential zones that convey the history, science, art, and values of money, we hope this place will help you realize that money is not merely a means of economic activity, but a form of artwork imbued with deeper significance.

Set against the backdrop between the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range and the East Sea, Gangneung is a beautiful city where mountains and the sea meet. We hope you can make precious memories alongside the museum in beautiful Gangneung.

The Gangneung Money Museum will always welcome you warmly.
Thank you.
