Shin Saimdang (1504-1551) was born in Bukpyeong Village, Gangneung, and at the age of 19, she married Yi Wonsu of the Deoksu Yi clan. In 1536, she gave birth to Yulgok Yi I at Ojukheon in Gangneung. It is known that Yulgok's formative years were spent in Gangneung until the age of six, where he absorbed the surroundings of mountains, seas, and rivers, nurturing his intellect and spirit.
Elevated as icons representing South Korea on banknotes, Shin Saimdang, an individual of both intellectual and artistic prowess, and her son Yulgok Yi I, a distinguished scholar and philosopher of his era, hold paramount significance. To honor the distinction bestowed by the moniker, ‘Gangneung, the Birthplace of the World's First Mother and Son Depicted on Money,’ we established the inaugural money museum as a stepping stone for Gangneung’s ascent into a global tourist destination.
With the dual objectives of spotlighting the eminence of Shin Saimdang and Yulgok Yi I, and creating a repository of Gangneung's currency artifacts and archives, the Gangneung Money Museum spans a sprawling 1,637㎡ within a single-story structure. It encompasses three permanent exhibition halls, one special exhibition hall, and a versatile exhibition area, collectively showcasing a total of 776 artifacts. Through the integration of cutting-edge digital technology, our aspiration is for this museum to emerge as a novel educational platform, presenting forward-looking and innovative exhibitions and experiences to the public.
The Gangneung Money Museum is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of Shin Saimdang and Yulgok Yi I while concurrently providing a pioneering cultural space that delves into the multifaceted values of money, transcending the boundaries of traditional currency exhibitions.
